Lloyd Mcneill was born in 1935 in Washington, DC. He is unique in his multiple talents, being an excellent jazz flutist as well as a composer of fascinating original tunes and music for ballet and drama; he published two books of poetry; but he is best known for his paintings and activities in teaching. His website (http://lmcneill1.weebly.com) gives detailed information on his education and career and displays samples of his work. McNeill, 86, died on Oct. 5, at an assisted living residence in Brooklyn. According to an obituary in the New York Times, he had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for the last five years.
Another unique feature is that he published his music exclusively on his own labels, Asha and Baobab. Fortunately they have all been reissued (in limited editions) on vinyl and CD by the British Soul Jazz label (https://soundsoftheuniverse.com/sjr), as copies of the original pressings are hard to find. Besides his six albums as a leader he recorded an album of improvised duets with Richard Kimball, and only a handful of sideman dates, playing mostly written parts. Solos are heard only on the albums by Brazilian composer Thiago de Mello and French bassist Jean Bardy.
