Both titles on:
Fentone 78 10"2001 — The Owl Sextette

The Tom Lord Discography list the two unissued titles from Charles Mingus' first Fentone session for this release number; Sunenblick and Homzy, who acquired all Fentone masters, found out this is incorrect. There is no entry for the session of The Owl Sextette in Lord's database.
As this was recorded during a recording ban, all the musicians had to use fantasy names, the group was called "The Owl Sextette": The Owl [= Herb Caro]; Colt Hoot [= Pony Poindexter]; ? Hoot [= Morrie Stewart]; Izzy Hoot [= Buzz Wheeler]; Schlomey Hoot [= Dick Hopkins] L. Hoot [= Johnny Berger]. This personnel was partly documented and partly identified by Dick Saltzman when listening to a tape of the tracks. In his memoirs Poindexter remembers Claude Williamson (p), Red Kelly (b), and Herby Stewart (sic!) (ts) besides Caro and Berger.

Broven just says "similar personnel" (to the previous Saunders King session). Poindexter does not mention his recordings with Saunders King in his memoirs. The Tom Lord Discography has Vernon King playing bass on some Saunders King sessions, but all others sources have Vernon Alley.

The recording dates for the sessions to record Jon Hendricks' LP " A Good Git-Together" are uncertain; all sources available to me say 1958 or 1959 (the Pacific Jazz CD reissue) or just late 1950's. The date given by Poindexter in his memoirs is November 1958, but since he also writes that the Montgomery session below was recorded only two weeks later this seems questionable; reissue producer Michael Cuscuna states October 1959 for the Montgomery quartet session. The fact that the Adderley Brothers (who participated in one session) recorded at the Blackhawk in San Francisco on October 18-20, 1959 for Riverside further supports this date, as Cannonball Adderley was still a member of the Miles Davis Sextet in 1958.
I'll Die Happy, which was first recorded by Louis Jordan in 1954, credited to "Moore-Hendricks" on the Vogue issue, to Hendricks alone on all other releases and other recordings.

In his memoirs, Pondexter tells he wrote A Good Git-Together after being called for the recording by producer Richard Bock, and Hendricks picked it up and set lyrics to it. Most issues and sources credit both lyrics and tune incorrectly to Hendricks.
A Good Git-Together was edited for the 45 rpm release. For the LP "A Portrait of Wes Montgomery", compiled after Montgomery's death, a horn section, arranged and conducted by Gerald Wilson, was overdubbed to this edited version, probably in July, 1968. Personnel: John Audino, Larry McGuire, Alex Rodriguez, Jerry Rusch (t), Thurman Green, Lester Robertson, Frank Strong (tb), Mike Wimberly (btb).

Music In The Air is Gigi Gryce's tune Wildwood with lyrics by Jon Hendricks; Gryce is not credited on all issues.
Some details remain unclear as far as the personnel on this session is concerned. The Adderley Brothers were not credited on the World Pacific and Vogue LP issues because they were under contract with Riverside at the time. There are no seprarate personnel credits on the back cover; Jon Hendricks mentions the musicians participating in his liner notes. He talks about the Adderleys as "Blockbuster and his brother on alto sax and cornet".
Poindexter is not listed in the Bruyninckx and Lord discographies for this session, nor mentioned as participating in the credits of the 2006 CD reissue, but in his memoirs Poindexter says Out Of The Past was a feature for him, and describes the session. He had collaborated with Hendricks on the preparation of the session. The addition of the Adderley brothers was producer Richard Bock's idea. Aural evidence clearly confirms the above personnel; e.g. Cannonball Adderley plays the opening thematic sax solo on Music In The Air, Poindexter is the sax soloist after Hendricks' vocals and on the remainder of this session's tracks, their styles are easily distinguished – Cannonball’s solo style is so easily recognized that more than one solo would have revealed his identity. (Nat Adderley does not play a single solo.) The cover photo shows the session musicians, the Adderley Brothers and Poindexter are seen. There are passages in the arrangements where two alto saxophones are audible. The front cover of the original World Pacific LP has "Pony Poindexter and The Montgomery Brothers" below Jon Hendricks' name, which has been changed to "With Cannonball Adderley and Wes Montgomery" on the CD reissue, which is incorrect as far as Poindexter's important role in this album is concerned. If his solos had been given to Adderley just for the recording session, Poindexter certainly would have remembered, he was extremely alert to injusticies in the music business.
Unfortunately the credits from the 2006 Pacific Jazz CD reissue have been adapted by practically all sources; e.g. Poindexter is omitted from the credits of the Essential Jazz Classics reissue and Cannonball Adderley named as featured soloist.

On several tracks, Jon Hendricks is accompanied by unidentified background singers; Hannah Dean is accompanied by a gospel group from Berkeley, California. The introduction probably belongs to the master number of track b.
Tracks were edited after the recording sessions and master numbers attributed in LP track sequence. The date above (from the Lord Discography) probably is the date of one of the sesions or when the master tape was edited and assembled; recording sessions most likely took place at several dates. The Monterey Jazz Festival where this music was first performed, took place September 23-25, 1960. A session by Big Miller for his Columbia LP "Revelation And The Blues" was recorded in Los Angeles on October 18, 1960, with master numbers RHCO46807, 46815, 46823, and 46825 assigned and Ben Webster, Bobby Gibbons, Gildo Mahones, Ike Issacs, and Jimmy Wormworth participating. Members of the rhythm section were not credited on all issues, but were Lambert, Hendrick, & Ross' regular accompaniment and/or participated in the Monterey performance. The Lord and Bruyninckx discographies list Eric Gale (p) for these sessions, but this is doubtful, as he was a guitarist and started his recording career in New York in 1961.

Pony Poindexter (ss) on e; Harold Mabern, Jr. (p) on e; Walter Perkins (d) on e; unknown (cga) on e; Josh White, jr. (v) on j.

Poindexter mentions recording one track with Josh White in January 1962 in his memoirs; all sources date this session in 1960. It is also mentioned in the liner notes of Jon Hendricks' LP "Fast Livin' Blues", Hendricks was present at the session, which is said to have been "some time before this album was recorded". Poindexter reports the sessions for Hendricks' album were held "a few weeks later". Elijah Wald's Josh White biography is of little use as far as discographical details are concerned, but the surrounding events in White's and Poindexter's lives make early 1961 probable for the later Elektra sessions.
Only bassist Lee was credited on the album cover. The Bruyninckx and Lord discographies list George Coleman on alto sax for this track, but it clearly is a soprano sax and Poindexter, who used the same introduction in his recording of Lagniappe for his Epic LP. Bruyninckx and Lord also list Harold Mabern and Walter Perkins for playing piano and drums, but this is unconfirmed. Perkins was credited for playing alongside Lee on the back cover of one of White's previous Elektra albums; Coleman, Mabern, and Perkins for another album. What is audible on this track only besides White's vocals and guitar and Bill Lee's bass is soprano sax, piano, one conga, and a drummer using brushes.

He was also not listed in the personnel credits on Columbia PC 38508. The uncredited background vocals on Do You Call That A Buddy are by band members. Another Git Together is the same tune as A Good Git-Together from the 1959 Pacific Jazz LP, and properly credited to Poindexter here.

Poindexter's composition Lagniappe (a creole expression for "a little something extra") is misspelled Lanyop on all issues (s. his memoirs). It is based on an old tune he heard in New Orleans, Black Gal. He uses the same sax introduction as in his recording with Josh White (s. above).

The credits of Columbia PC 38508 list Ron Carter on bass for this session; on Columbia C2K 64933 it was changed to "Ron Carter or William Yancey". Sound and playing style suggest it was Yancey rather than Carter; the fact that Carter is listed as playing bass on two other sessions in New York on the same day, March 9, 1962, led by Charles Bell and Tadd Dameron, makes his participation unlikely.

In his memoirs Poindexter tells he was called for recording Teo Macero's arrangement of "Rudolph The Rednose Reindeer" "later the same week" after finishing his first session for the "Pony's Express" LP, but the identical personnel suggests it was recorded at this session.

In his memoirs Poindexter tells how the group was dropped by Columbia Records after they had returned from Europe in June, 1962 without Annie Ross but was contracted by RCA within two weeks and "taped a bossa nova album" at the RCA Studio on 30th Street. There is no other evidence for this session; maybe Poindexter mixed it up with the live recordings made in September, 1962 which included bossa nova tunes.

On Gumbo Filet several band members sing the tune's title, Poindexter among them. The conga player is not mentioned in any issue credits or in previous discographies. Sound and playing style suggest it could be Juan Amalbert, who recorded for Prestige at the time.
This session was scheduled for release on 12" LP New Jazz NJ 8297, which was never issued; some printed covers of this issue were used to pack copies of Prestige PR 16001.

These are private live recordings made during Poindexter's first engagement in Paris, first released posthumously in memory of guitarist René Thomas and under his name, focusing on his solos - most tracks were faded out after these and are marked "incomplete" for this reason. The Gambit release contains longer edits of some performances. Muscial quality is very high with excellent solos, audio quality is substandard. Some fadeouts were caused by the tape running out.

A Ted Curson Quartet with Ervin, Woode, and Bateman recorded for Fontana in the Netherlands on May 13, 1966. Comparing all of the musicians' itinaries makes late May probable, e.g. Drew was back in Copenhagen in June. The Belgian TV Website confirms the May 1966 recording date.

Jan Hammer (p) on a-c, f, (org) on d-e; Pony Poindexter (v) on a, c, e.

All LP credits give September, 1969 as recording date, which probably is incorrect. Jan Hammer, George Mraz, Michael Dennert, and Cees See all were members of the house rhythm section at The Domicile in the summer and autumn of 1968, before Hammer left for the USA, and participated in several recording sessions during that time period. Poindexter tells in his memoirs he performed at the Domicile from September 19 to October 6, 1968. As the Session LP was issued only in 1970, the 1969 date probably is a mistake by the editors of the LP credits. By September 1969 Jan Hammer was in the USA. The 2021 limited edition (500 copies) LP reissue on HGBS Blue uses the recording date from the MPS archives and re-arranges the track sequence.
