Page generated on October 1, 2022

http://www.bsnpubs.com/fantasy/fantasy/03fantasy3300.html shows an entry "8386 - Fuego - Cal Tjader [1970]", without a cover or track list, but there is no Tjader album with this title to be found anywhere else.
Maybe this was a working title and number for Tjader's first Fantasy LP in 1970. There is no Fantasy LP with this number by any other artist.

There is an unidentified horn section heard, in which Mel Martin probably played (he is credited for playing on other parts of the soundtrack). The credits do not state who plays which type of piano - both are audible.
Cal Tjader is heard only during the last 30 seconds when a different (instrumental) part of the song is faded in, perhaps recorded at a separate sesssion with only vibes, guitar, electric piano, bass, and drums.

The DVD credits list only one track titled "Improvisation & Blues" with a total timing of 6:48 minutes. It opens with an accompanied out of tempo solo introduction by Gillespie and then segues into a slow blues tempo for 20 seconds. An obvious edit leads to four minutes of a different piece with solos by Gillespie and Tjader, ended by a theme played in unison by Gillespie and Glenn, probably from the Gillespie bandbook of the time.
Paulinho da Costa was a member of Gillespie's band at the time, but the conga player seen on screen looks more like Tjader's band member, Michael Smithe; another unidentified musician can be seen picking up a cuica from the percussion table, both are hardly audible.
Track a. has not been auditioned; it could be from the same performance or even be (partly?) identical with the DVD track. The credits and date for this track are from the Malpaso CD.

There is no date of recording or issue on the LP cover or label. Cal Tjader is credited appearing courtesy of Fantasy Records Inc. as on the other LP Aguirre recorded as Santiago. It is very hard to identify any percussion or vibes playing on any of the tracks of this LP, although the back cover reproduces a note by Tjader stating he enjoyed participating. There are unidentified orchestral parts (probably overdubbed) on several tracks, strings, trumpets, and trombones.
Juan Guillermo Aguirre Mandiola, nicknamed Memo Aguirre and artistically known as Captain Memo, was a singer/songwriter from Chile who moved to California in 1972.
