Paul Horn (f) on b-e, h-i, (af) on a, f, (as) on j; Cal Tjader (vib) on b-h, j, (p) on a, (gui) on h, (cwb) on d, j; Lonnie Hewitt (p) on b-j, (cta) on a; Johnny Rae (gng) on a, f; Armando Peraza (bgo) on a-e, g-j, (cwb) on b, e-f, h.
Track f is the same tune recorded as Fuji in November 1963 for the LP Breeze From The East.
There are no vibes audible on track i; Paul Horn does not play on track g; it must be Tjader playing the hand-held cowbell whenever bongos are heard at the same time. I assume it was Tjader who played guiro on h and Peraza the cowbell; Johnny Rae probably plays the gong (in fact a tam tam, as it should be called correctly) on a & f; the LP notes say Paul Horn plays bass flute on some tracks where it is in fact an alto flute in its lowest range.

The information on recording dates for the LP Cal Tjader Plays The Contemporary Music Of Mexico And Brazil found in the credits of the Verve LP and CD reissue and the Verve discography is not identical.
The liner notes of the 1962 LP and the CD reissue say all tracks for the album Cal Tjader Plays The Contemporary Music Of Mexico And Brasil were recorded March 5-7, 1962 - the Verve Discography spreads the recording over three dates, February 28, March 5, and May 21. The dates in Ruppli's Verve Discography are consistent with the master numbers assigned, even more when seen in context with adjacent Verve recording sessions, and personnel listings are correct, except that Changuito is omitted (like on the credits for the album with Anita O'Day); for these reasons I decided to use the recording data from the Verve discography. Still, the take of Silenciosa issued may be from a later session but filed under the master number first assigned.

The second half of b. is a percussion workout: b. Bill Fitch plays a shaker (chocalho) and a conga drum (with a stick) simultaneously, Rae and Schreiber keep playing bass and drum set; there are two cowbells heard as well as what could be two high notes on the vibes played with the vibes mallet handle - this must be Fischer and Tjader. This procedure can bee seen on the videotape of the Jazz Scene USA performance from the same time.

Phil Kraus (xyl) on b.
This is a collective personnel listing of the woodwind players for all three sessions for the LP Several Shades of Jade. Phil Kraus is mistakenly listed as a woodwind player; in fact he played orchestral percussion. This renders the assumption in the CD reissue credits that Tjader may have played the xylophone parts obsolete.
The CD reissue credits state there are conflicting data for distribution of the tracks to the dates on the union reports, but those from the Verve work books seem more plausible - they are used here, as they are also found in the Verve discography - s. the CD reissue booklet for details.
The double LP reissue The Exotic Sounds of Cal Tjader combined all but one track from three Verve LPs in a different playing sequence.

Willie Rodriguez (per) on a-b.
For this album, three sessions for the basic tracks with Cal Tjader and the rhythm section were held in May, 1964. The album credits and the Verve discography list only collective personnel for all three basic sessions of the Warm Wave album, thus it is impossible to say who played piano/guitar on individual tracks.
The orchestral parts (strings, flutes, and voices) were then arranged by Claus Ogerman and overdubbed on June 18, 1964 at Rudy Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. The pecussion parts by Willie Rodriguez may also have been overdubbed at this session.

According to Johnny Rae's recollections Tjader's band was brought in from California when producer Creed Taylor's recording concept with NewYork studio musicians did not work as expected. They recorded the whole album in one three hour session on November 20; only one track from the preceding sessions was used for the original LP issue. Rae also reports Willie Bobo and the singer were brought in to overdub vocals and quijada to Soul Sauce the following day.

b. listed with "composer unknown" on the Verve CD, but it is in fact a Gary McFarland tune, recorded as "Over Easy" in August 1965 for his LP "The In Sound". He may have written the arrangements for the session.
The three tracks under Donald Byrd's leadership were recorded at the same session, or one immediately following on the same day, personnel was not documented but probably includes some of the players from the Tjader tracks. Their master numbers are adjacent to those of the Tjader tracks of the November 20 session. The sequence of master numbers suggests that the three Tjader tracks might already have been attempted at the November 19 session.

Personnel listings based on the credits on the CD reissue and the Verve discography, those on the original LP are incorrect.
Some reissues identify track c as "Reza (originally "Reza e Aleluia)", which is not accurate. Lobo recorded these two pieces for his debut LP, they were separate tracks, although both refer to Afro-Brazilian religion. Tjader had both in the band book but recorded them years apart.
The composer of d., titled "Bossa" is not identified in the Verve discography. Donald Byrd recorded his tune with this title on December 14, 1964 for Verve, i.e. shortly after the Tjader sessions he was involved in, but it more likely it is Armando Peraza's tune which Tjader often played when the percussionist was in his band, and recorded for Skye.

On all three issues the track is listed as Soul Sauce. All three issues were on labels of the Italian Curcio company.
The cover gives 1961 as year of recording, but Terry Hilliard confirms the recording took place at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1965 with Gillespie joining the Tjader band as a special guest. Gillespie's conga player Big Black is listed in the LP credits, although Hilliard cannot recall any Gillespie band members joining them. Another source confirms the participation of Gillespie's drummer of the time, Rudy Collins; since drums and timbales with two cowbells as well as congas and bongos are all audible at the same time, this personnel seems plausible. The sound resembling a guiro is audible only when the vibes are silent, which is why I credited Tjader for playing it.

There are no personnel or recording credits on this album. It was probably recorded in proximity to the preceding Verve session with Palmieri's band "La Perfecta", whose regular members are listed. One of the trombonists plays a solo during the fadeout of track e. although there is no section playing. The unidentified vocals and percussion most likely are by band members.

There is an entry in the Verve discography for Samba Do Sueño for this session with this master number, but that track clearly is a studio recording. My guess is the master numbers of both tracks were mixed up.

Derek Smith (org) on a-c, e; Armando Peraza (bgo) on a-b, d-e, (per) on a-b, d-e; Ray Barretto (cga) on a-b, d-e; Chico O'Farrill (con) on a-d.
e attributed in the Verve discography to the January 1967 live recording, but it is clearly audible it is a studio track with the players from the March 1967 sessions. This could be a misinterpretation of the album credits, which state that e and the one live track from January 1967 are the only tunes not arranged by Chico O'Farrill. Furthermore, it looks like the master numbers of Samba Do Sueño and Los Bandidos were mixed up. This listing corrects these errors.

According to the liner notes, Don Sebesky was sent the tapes of the basic tracks and lead sheets to write arrangements after the recording session of the rhythm quartet. Flute, brass, voices, percussion, and strings were overdubbed in a New York studio at a later date early in 1968. Stamm and Laws are credited in the liner notes; in some tracks multiple flute and brass parts are audible, but it is not clear whether there are additional players involved or they overdubbed.
In all other discographies João Donato is credited as pianist on this date, but he plays organ, there is no piano audible! There are no separate personnel credits, but the liner notes mention Donato playing organ, as well as Mitchell and Thigpen.

Johnny Pacheco was not credited for contractual reasons. The liner notes state that McFarland played a second set of vibes "on a couple of tunes" - they are audible on two tracks.
Personnel listings are based on aural evidence; this session appears to have been recorded live in the studio except for some percussion and Abene's keyboard overdubs, the latter often sound much like an amplified jazz guitar.

Armando Peraza (cga) on a-b, d-g.
Although the back cover of the Dunhill CD states "Original release date: 1968" there never was a release on LP. This has been corrected on The SACD issue after Duncan Reid informed the label. Armando Peraza misspelled "Perazza" on several issues.
A version of Nica's Dream released with this session proves to be identical with the take on Cal Tjader Plugs in from February 20-21, 1969.
