b. Doggie March

Carol Sloane (Carol Vann) singing with the Ed Drew Orchestra
I quote the email from Carol in response to my questions:

Q: Do you know if this WPRO recording was before or after the Cadillac single?
CS: “I don't have any information on this, even to the point of how or why I have it at all unless Drew gave it to me. But I think this was before the Cadillac single.”

Q: Any details on the personnel? We know it is the Ed Drew Orchestra. Do you remember what instrument he played?
CS: “Regular, standard set-up: four reed, maybe five ... two trombones, three trumpets, piano, bass and drums. I never saw him hold an instrument unless a baton is one!”

Q: Any comments on the circumstances of this record. Was this a pressed recording? Or a one off done by a record recorder?
CS: “Probably the latter ... All I remember is that I was dressed in a prim little suit, wore a hat and carried a purse and gloves.”
Recording of Pretend by Carol Sloane under the name of Carol Van

Date: 1953
Label: Cadillac

Carol Sloane (ldr), Graham Prince (dir), George Barnes (g), Carol Sloane (v)

a. So Long - 2:53(Jim O'Neil, Jim Howe, Daniels)
b. Strange Power - 2:43(Robert Mellin, Moore, Hill)
Both titles on:
Cadillac 78165   (1953)
Cadillac 45165-X45   (1953)

Here is the derivation of the name Carol Sloane as explained by Carol herself:

"To get this one straight for all time, I was born Carol Morvan. When I began singing at age fourteen, I called myself Carol Vann, and was singing under that name when I joined Larry's [Elgart] band. He didn't much like Vann, so every night for the first six months, he introduced me as Carol "Smith", Carol "Price", Carol "Rogers"... as he experimented to see what he thought might "fit". Finally, one day in his office he hit on Sloane, and I cried "YES"!!! Made it legal around 1959 I think."

The record label for the Cadillac 45 has Carol's name misspelled. According to Carol, "Just before I met Larry Elgart, I was calling myself Carol Vann, shortened from Morvan, my maiden name, with an added "N" to make it a bit more elegant than "Van", which to my eyes looked stumpy. Graham Prince got it wrong."
