This is a rather different project than my standard discographies. It attempts to document every performance by this ensemble during its short lifespan (May 1970-August 1971). Many of the entries are not based on recordings, but on mentions in newspapers and magazines and on anecdotal evidence. In the summer of 1970, Circle evolved out of the Chick Corea trio which existed while Corea and Holland were still members of the Miles Davis group (and in fact, this trio continued to record during Circle's existence and Braxton recorded outside of the group as well). The group broke up in Los Angeles and Corea went on to work with Stan Getz and Return To Forever, while the other three continued to interact frequently into the mid-1970s.
This work was undertaken as part of a much larger project that will detail
the performances (recorded and unrecorded) of Anthony Braxton.
See the Braxton
project homepage. All information welcome.
While this is the most comprehensive and accurate discography/chronology of Circle ever produced, there still may be omissions and errors. Please help if you can.
